2008 - White House Christmas Tree Ornament
I was invited by my Congressman Paul Kanjorski of the 21st Congressional District of Pennsylvania, to decorate an ornament for the 2008 White House Christmas Tree. The First Lady, Mrs Laura Bush selected a red, white and blue color theme and requested that the ornaments "... reflect the American Spirit of each congressional district".
I painted four images on keystone shaped canvases that were glued to the 18 inch ornament and then covered the ornament with a pattern of beads to mimic an old fashioned Christmas ornament. The paintings represented the six towns and cities in Congressman Kanjorski's District. The paintings were: trains at the Scranton Steamtown Historical Site; the Courthouse, Market Street Bridge and Susquehanna River Front Project in Wilkes-Barre; the famous Coal Breakers of Nanticoke and Dunmore; and the Bloomsberg Fair. Here, I signed my name behind an airplane flying over the famous arched sign.
On December 2nd, I attended a fabulous reception for all the artists from across the country. My daughter, Margie Bart accompanied me. It was so amazing to see the White House decorated for the holidays, meet many of the artists from across the country; and partake of the wonderful buffet. The First Lady was gracious and during her speech she mentioned a number of the themes and happened to mention "...a Christmas Train from Pennsylvania...". I was thrilled!!!!!!
